IHRRI.COM : International Human Rights Rank Indicator

I wanted to chat about the IHRRI website.  I know I used it as a reference in another blog post and it may seem that I am calling the websites statistical accuracy into question in this article BUT as long as IHRRI applies the formulas evenly then the use of it referenced in my previous post are not in danger.  It is only if they are applying formulas incorrectly or unevenly.

I sent them an email and asked the following questions and am waiting for the answer.  When I get the answers I will update this post and add the answers.

Questions for IHRRI:

  1. Where can I find historical data?  How can I read the reports on a given country?
  2. Where can I find how you rate categories (e.g. Right to freedom of Movement)?
  3. What is the legal status of the people offering the reports?  I ask this because of course illegal immigrants are going to slant the results.
  4. How do you normalize the data considering you might get thousands of reports on one country and only two on another?  A better question might be, where do I find the margin for error numbers?

NOW when I sent these questions it was because I saw this:

ihrri_unitedstates

Now when I saw this I started looking closely at it and wondered how they calculated these bars.  I mean lets take the “Right to Liberty of Movement” for example… HOW could the United States be 50%?  In fact how can it be anything less then 90-100% on that?  What reports could make someone feel like their right to movement were suppressed?  The only people I can imagine that might think that way are the criminals OR the illegal immigrants.  Who would have their movement curtailed or suppressed?  I cannot imagine any legal citizen having that problem… I know I have NEVER experienced it.

My point is that I cannot see these stats as accurate and really want to know HOW they are coming up with these values.  If 90% of the people reporting are illegal immigrants, foreign visitors, terrorists from Gitmo and/or criminals THEN I see it.

It also could be swayed by the actions of our government because they  are so ridiculous it is not funny.  They spy on foreign leaders, they lie to the American people, they infringe on our rights, and worse of all they cannot accept responsibility for the actions they take when they are wrong.  As far as I am concerned most of our politicians belong in the categories I mentioned in the last paragraph… they are in one of the following categories: illegal immigrants, foreign visitors, terrorists from Gitmo and/or criminals.  None of those people mentioned above understand the American way of life yet they make claims all the time.  I await the email back from ihrri.com because I am really interested in what they have to say.  I cannot help but wonder… who are they to judge us?

I want to touch on one of those groups.  Illegal Immigrants.  I think it is possible that the rest of the world (or at least the makes of these numbers at ihrri.com) completely misunderstand the rule of law and how it is applied (or should be applied) in the United States.  Other countries want to coddle the people and give anyone a right to be their citizen BUT I do not think that is the right way to do it.  Lets look at Britain.  There are a series of articles in the Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk) that really show how immigration policies (or lack there of) is slowly ripping apart Britain:

What I am trying to say here is that there is NOTHING wrong with immigration, done correctly everyone can gain from it.  The problem is it is NOT done correctly in the United States and as such is destroying our country as well.  I believe it is the one reason we have so many ‘bad reports’ from ihrri.com.
