Abolish the IRS

When you look at the many times the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has been used for political gain it is astounding.  What amazes me more is that people get away with it for sometime before anyone does anything about it.

In an article by Matthew Burke at TPNN called “Pro-Free Speech Group Files Ethics Complaint Against Sen. Chuck Schumer; Eight Other Democrat Senators” Barbara Boxer (D) was quoted as saying:

Richard Nixon faced impeachment charges for attempting to use the IRS for political purposes. These similar actions surely require the Ethics Committee to sanction one or more of these senators or, at the very least, to adopt rules to ensure it never happens again.  Over many years, both Republicans and Democrats sought to use the IRS for political purposes and this must stop.

Many Senators and Congressman are up in arms over this (of course more republicans are) because it is a particularly horrible crime.  Think about the power of the IRS?  The IRS has more power than any single department within the federal government machine.  When you use it as a weapon it becomes extremely heinous.  One such person is Senator Rand Paul (R).  He has a petition going that asks you to sign if you want to abolish the IRS (link here).  NOW I do not know the particulars yet (have not read his petition yet) but many aspects of the IRS (if it were abolished) would have to be handled other ways, by another department of the federal government OR by the “NEW” IRS.

I actually want the IRS abolished but if we cannot abolish it, at the very least it needs to be reformed. If it were reformed the first reform I would do is completely disconnect it from the federal government.  Make it independent.  The IRS MUST be removed from the influence of ANY ONE BRANCH of the government.  It needs to be free from government intimidation YET it needs to be regulated to be sure it does not go off and harm the country on its own.  Maybe it should be a branch of the Congressional Budget Office (CBO)?

No matter how you stack it up… the IRS is too powerful and is used as a weapon by many politicians and as Barbara Boxer said “this must stop”.
